CSES Module 5: Democracy Divided

Scientific Theme & Scope

CSES Module 5 (2016–2021) focuses on the theme:
“Democracy Divided: People, Politicians and the Politics of Populism”

This module was designed to address rising challenges to contemporary representative democracy, including:

  1. Populist Attitudes & Anti-Establishment Sentiment: Measurement of citizen attitudes regarding the virtuous people vs. corrupt elite, sovereignty, and majoritarianism.
  2. Citizen-Elite Congruency: Linking voter preferences with expert party coding on immigration, European integration, cultural liberalism, and economic redistribution.
  3. Political Trust & Media Consumption: Trust in national institutions, electoral integrity, and social media news habits.
