Scientific Theme & Focus

CSES Module 4 (2011–2016) was developed under the chairmanship of André Blais (Université de Montréal) with the core theme:
“Distributional Politics and Social Protection”

The module addresses key questions regarding political economy and electoral behavior:

  1. Redistribution & Social Policy: Citizen attitudes toward government spending, welfare state policies, and progressive taxation.
  2. Economic Hardship & Voting: The impact of economic crises, austerity policies, and personal financial vulnerability on vote choice.
  3. Electoral System Institutions: The relationship between proportional representation, government coalitions, and distributional outcomes.
